This new for 2002 column on advocacy which is to represent the interests of members and the wider community, for which the Law Institute actively seeks to influence policy and legislation through lobbying and submissions to government, the courts and other bodies. The column has a LIV and the media column, which lists all instances of note in the media for the preceeding months > Some submissions in this column include:- ; Options for paid maternity leave - the workpace relations section has made a submission to the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commmission's Sex Discrimination Unit's paper on options for maternity leave ; Powers of attorney - The Institute has made a submission to the state Department of Justice to ts exposure draft of the Instruments (Enduring Powers of Attorney) Proposals ; Retail leases proposal - The Institute has subitted its comments on the Retail Leases Proposals 2002 ; Motor Vehicle theft - the Criminal Law Section has made a submisson to the state government parliamentary inquiry into motor vehicle theft ; Rural retreat - The Agriculture Legislation (Amendments & Repeals) Bill will amend the Sale of Land Act to require sellers of rural land to include in their vendors statement a notice to intending purchasers ; Waiting on the bench - Chief Jstice of the Family Court, Alaistair Nicholson ; Legal assistance scheme ; Legal aid - The Institute met with Reverend Tim Costello to talk about the impact od gamily on the demands of Legal aid ; University lecture circuit - CEO Jon Cain given lectures to final year law students on on the regulaiton of the profession ; Review of the Legal Practice Act (Vic) ; Life in the Law Discussion group - meetings between judges of the Supreme Court and Junior practitioners
