Notes:
Despite a history of rigid non-interference with deliberating juries, the last decade has seen changes which indicate a retreat from this position. The decision in R v Briffa and Portillo was a conspicuous example of a court stepping in where there was blatant intolerance with a jury. However exactly where are the limts of permissible contact with juries is largely a matter of speculation.
