Under s 464ZF of the Crimes Act 1958 (Vic), police may ask a court to order a person found guilty of a serious crime to submit to a medical procedure for the taking of a body sample for DNA analysis. The section started operation on 1 July 1998. Early experience suggests that orders are being made too readily.
